Trainee Tracking Document (LJMU ITT TRACKER)

Trainees should be proactively engaged in their own development. They should be increasingly more confident and competent at evaluating and reflecting on their professional development and practice.

‘Outstanding’ trainees will show characteristics of actively seeking mentor’s advice and are able to successfully monitor their progress and development.

What is the Purpose of the Tracking Document?

The Tracking Document contains grade descriptors for each standard. It also contains audit pages where trainees log evidence to support the evaluation of their progress. The Grade Descriptors are designed as a ‘best fit‘ model and are intended to promote parity across the LJMU partnership in the assessment of trainees against the Teachers’ standards.

The tracking document ensures that trainees understand what is required of them in terms of:

  • their performance against the Teachers’ Standards for QTS as they progress through their training programme;
  • what they need to do to move from one level of performance to the next.

The LJMU ITT Trainee Tracking document (TRACKER) originally developed in collaboration with other North West HE providers and Teach First is designed to be used ‘formatively’ by trainees and their mentors to track their progress in and across the Phases, signalling where they are at ‘that moment in time’, in the context of the setting, and as a result of the training opportunities available. It is also used summatively to benchmark progress at key points.

Trainees will need to:

  • set targets prior to placement, in discussion with their University-based tutor that support their individual training needs;
  • Discuss with the school-based ITT mentor during the induction period a training plan based on the initial targets and audits of experience.
  • Audit and track their progress at key points during the training matched against the grade descriptors and, in discussion with their school based mentor, highlight this on the descriptors;
  • Audit and have available appropriate evidence to exemplify the descriptors in order to demonstrate the level at which they have satisfied the standard;

How ITT mentors should use the Tracker:

  • Use the LJMU ITT TRACKER Grade Descriptors ‘formatively’ at weekly meetings to discuss progress against the standards and ‘summatively’ at the mid and final review points to give a fair and consistent grading at the end of the phase. Highlighted aspects of the tracker should match the grades on the associated review forms for the phase.
  • Discuss regularly with the trainees their level of performance for each standard and how they might progress, using exemplification from the tracker to support the discussion.

As the TRACKER descriptors are used throughout the training period, it is not unusual during Phase 1 and the early part of Phase 2 for trainees to have evidence which supports a grading of 3; this is not an indication of poor progress at this point. It is however anticipated that trainees, once they gain further experience, can demonstrate achievement at Grades 1 and 2 prior to the award of QTS.
