DfE Teachers’ Standards 2012 (reference Section D Assessing Performance and Professional Conduct)

All trainees are expected to demonstrate Part 2 of the Teachers’ Standards from the outset. We expect our trainee teachers to make the education of their pupils their first concern, and hold them accountable for achieving the highest possible standards in work and conduct.

We expect LJMU teachers to act with honesty and integrity; have strong subject knowledge, keep their knowledge and skills as teachers up-to-date, be self-critical; forge positive professional relationships; and work with parents in the best interests of their pupils.

Evidencing the Teachers’ Standards

Each Phase of the LJMU ITT training programme focuses on the progressive development of the Teachers’ Standards (at QTS level).

The LJMU Grade Descriptors in the LJMU ITT tracker are applied throughout the training programme, both to arrive at consistent summative judgements and to establish formative targets. The grade descriptors should be used formatively by those assessing trainees to help track progress against each Standard, to determine areas where additional development might need to be observed, or to identify areas where a trainee is already meeting the Standard requirements at a ‘high level for QTS’. Progress in each phase should be highlighted and agreed by mentors. Using the descriptors throughout the training inevitably means that some trainees are likely to attain lower grades in the early phases, as they build up their experience and evidence.

NB:It is very important that trainees, school mentors and university tutors are clear that lower grades are normal at the earlier phases of training and that a Grade 3 at the end of Phase 2 indicates expected progress.

In using the LJMUITT Grade Descriptors from the outset, our approach provides an opportunity to map the trainee’s progress, highlight priorities for professional development, support target setting and offer the trainee a clear opportunity to reach their potential.

In addition to using The Standard descriptors to set and monitor targets they are also used summatively to assess the outcome grade for the trainee using a ‘best fit’ approach at each Phase Review point.  The Final grading describes the standard that can reasonably be expected of the trainee teacher at the point of recommendation for the award of QTS.

It is expected that almost all trainees meet the Standards at a Good (2) level or Outstanding (1) level by the end of their training.
