The ITT Core Content Framework
The ITT Core Content Framework is a statutory document which sets out a minimum curriculum entitlement for student teachers. It places a duty on providers of initial teacher training — and their partner schools — to meet this entitlement, as part of a carefully sequenced and coherent curriculum, appropriate for the subject, phase and age range.
The ITT Core Content Framework has been designed to support development in 5 core areas:
- Behaviour management
- Pedagogy
- Curriculum
- Assessment
- Professional behaviours
All LJMU ITT curricula have been designed to incorporate the Core Content Framework in full, but our student teachers’ learning will also be extended beyond the statutory entitlement.
The Core Content Framework is not an assessment tool and should not be used as such. Student teachers are not expected to collect evidence against the ITT Core Content Framework, and they will continue to be assessed against the Teachers' Standards only, at the end of their programme, in order to be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status.
To align the ITT Core Content Framework with the 8 Teachers' Standards, the ITT Core Content Framework is presented in 8 sections. Behaviour management is addressed in High Expectations and Managing Behaviour (S1 and S7); pedagogy is addressed in How Pupils Learn, Classroom Practice and Adaptive Teaching (S2, S4, S5); and curriculum, assessment and professional behaviours are addressed in S3, S6 and S8 respectively.
The ITT Core Content Framework sets out two types of content: 'Learn that...' statements in the left hand column and 'Learn how to...' statements in the right hand column. The 'Learn how to' statements entitle student teachers to opportunities to learn from expert colleagues and to practise their developing skills, drawing on feedback from, and discussions with mentors and tutors about how to improve.
