Welcome to mentoring at LJMU. We have a long-standing reputation for excellence in teacher education, consistently delivering high-quality provision through our strong partnership with schools in the Liverpool City Region and beyond. Our partnership is a source of great pride.

LJMU offers innovative approaches to Initial Teacher Education (ITE), collaborating with primary, secondary, and other education providers across the North-West of England and beyond. In our most recent inspection (June 2023), Ofsted graded both Primary and Secondary ITE provision at LJMU as 'Good'. A particular strength noted by Ofsted is our ambitious ITE curriculum, underpinned by appropriate and pertinent research, providing student teachers with the breadth and depth of knowledge they need to succeed.

LJMU and its partner schools are dedicated to developing socially engaged teachers who are well-prepared to make a positive difference to the life chances of pupils in our region.

As an expert school colleague, you ensure that our trainee teachers have access to the 'core body of knowledge, skills and behaviours that define great teaching' (pg.4 TTECF). You play a pivotal role in the development of student teachers across the phases of the ITE journey. Your continued development as an ITT mentor is of central importance to us, as is continuing to develop our partnership and opportunities for all. Together in partnership, our student-focused approach strengthens the development of knowledge and understanding, equipping our student teachers with the skills required in a 21st century classroom.

Proud to work collaboratively

We have aligned our mentoring through the Liverpool and Greater Merseyside ITT Group to enable our partner schools to have previous mentor development acknowledged. Mentoring evidence is currently aligned with the following institutions:

  • Associated Merseyside Partnership SCITT (Lydiate Learning Trust)
  • Merseyside Boroughs ITE Partnership
  • Generate Teaching Hub
  • Rainbow Teaching School Hub
  • Inspire Learning Teaching School Hub
  • Liverpool Hope University
  • Edge Hill University
  • University of Chester

The DfE recognises the importance of school-based mentors during the ITE year. Student teachers have an entitlement to receive 'clear, consistent and effective mentoring through structured feedback from expert colleagues' (pg.7 ITTECF). At LJMU throughout the ITE year, you have access to mentor development opportunities, and this ensures confidence when supporting student teachers as they transition through Phases 1-3.

A contribution towards facilitating 'high-quality mentoring' is available for participating schools (16-hours of initial mentor training for new mentors and 6-hours refresher training for experienced mentors). We are committed to providing developmental opportunities for all our mentors.
